The Indika script
Indika lipi | ईन्दीका लीपी |
1 INTRODUCTION
The Indika script was created by Nikhil Sinha in August 2011 to write the Indika language. It is an alphabetic script. It has been modelled on Indic scripts. The Indika language is also written in the Roman and Devanagari scripts.
2 ALPHABET
There are twenty-three letters in the Indika alphabet – eighteen consonants and five vowels. In addition, there are six diacritics. These have been given below.
| a i u e o | आ ई ऊ ए ओ
| k g n1 | क् ग् ङ्
| c j n2 | च् ज् ञ्
| t d n3 | त् द् न्
| p b m | प् ब् म्
| y r l v | य् र् ल् व्
| s h | स् ह्
1: occurs only before k, g
2: occurs only before c, j
3: occurs everywhere else
The dot underneath all consonants is the halanta. It indicates that the consonant is not followed by any vowel. When the halanta is removed, the vowel a follows the consonant. If any other vowel follows the consonant, this is indicated with a vowel diacritic on the consonant letter. Two vowel diacritics cannot occur on a single consonant. Therefore, when two vowels follow a consonant, the second vowel is written with the independent vowel letter. Vowels at the beginning of a word are also written with vowel letters. The vowel diacritics have been given below.
| k ka ki ku ke ko | क् का की कू के को
| g ga gi gu ge go | ग् गा गी गू गे गो
The anusvara () is used as a shorthand for nasal consonants (, , , ). It always occurs in between a vowel (letter or diacritic) and a plosive consonant (, , , , , , , ). The pronunciation of the anusvara depends on the plosive consonant that follows it. It is always pronounced as the nasal consonant which occurs in the same group as the plosive consonant. For example, before , , the anusvara is pronounced as . Therefore, is equivalent to .
